Lanterns
I have begun a series of wall-mounted light boxes displaying collages made of old player piano sheets. Called Lanterns, these pieces relate to the Semaphores in both composition and implication. The Lanterns attempt to reinvent the artifacts of a mechanical language, the pockmarked paper rolls that translate into music. Unlike sheet music, whose interpretation varies between musicians, this largely obsolete technology was an early method of recording original performances. Looser in composition than the Semaphores, the Lanterns de-mechanize this language and repurpose it towards their own ambiguous end.
